 SARATOGA LAND MANAGEMENT CORP. BACKGROUND

The Lumac Company was formed in 1962 by William Mackay.  For ten years he ran a wood products business with the 6,500 acre Luther Forest as his resource base.  The following decades saw an overwhelming demand by the forest land owning public for private forestry services.  To fill this demand, Lumac added staff and expanded the company’s forest management activities to local landowners in need of assistance.

In the years that followed, the company expanded its staff of foresters and support personnel to accommodate the demand for forestland management services in eastern New York and Connecticut, while continuing to manage the Luther Forest property.  With the addition of Bob Rice (’79), Chris Nelson (’82), Alec Mackay (’85), Chuck Gerber (’85), Pete Nicholas (’90), and Brett Joly (’03).  Lumac has been able to expand its scope of services and service territory from the capital district of New York to include central, western and northern New York.  In 1987, Bob, Alec, Chuck and Chris became the owners of Lumac, as co-founder Bill Mackay retired.  1988 saw the founding of Saratoga Land Management Corp.

At the outset, this group of professionals dedicated themselves not only to ecologically sound forest management principles, but also to the landowners they serve.  Management plans are designed using a common sense approach of integrating these principles with landowner goals and objectives.

With an ever-growing client base having more and more diverse ownership objectives, Saratoga Land Management Corp., created Forest Solutions in 1996.  Forest Solutions brings consulting services to landowners across the state who need assistance in forest land assessment, forest taxation, timber sale planning and implementation, as well as general information regarding forest management.
